Family Preparedness in Facing Natural Disasters
The Ubaya Disaster Psychology Study Group (KSPB) once again held a webinar on Saturday, February 6, 2021. With the title “Family Preparedness in Facing Natural Disasters”, participants are expected to learn how to minimize risks from natural disasters, especially from the family sphere. At least 40 participants attended the webinar which was held online via the Zoom application.
Present as a resource person, Dra. Sri Wahyuningsih, M.Kes., Psychologist., as the non-permanent lecturer of the Ubaya Faculty of Psychology opened the discussion by explaining the survey results related to natural disasters. Based on the survey results, victims of natural disasters can be saved because of the readiness of themselves and their families. Therefore, Sri said that family is the main key in dealing with disaster emergencies. According to her, decision-making can be realized if there is open communication between family members. "Through communication, families can convey what each family member needs to do in the event of a disaster," she continued.
The discussion was continued by Dra. Ayuni, M.Sc., who is also the non-permanent lecturer of the Ubaya Faculty of Psychology. On this occasion, she conveyed the things that need to be done by the family when a disaster occurs, especially the earthquake and tsunami. According to her, the most important thing that must be prepared is a disaster preparedness bag. "It's a good idea for each family member to have their own disaster preparedness bag, along with notes on important numbers," she explained. This disaster preparedness bag includes essential papers, first aid kit, flashlight, extra batteries, food that doesn't need to be cooked, footwear, toiletries, blankets, money, and clothes for at least three days.
On the Q&A session, one of the participants, Caroline, asked, “Why are we advised to stay at home during an earthquake?” Responding to the question, Ayuni replied that this depends on the conditions being experienced. “If the earthquake is strong enough, it is advisable to stay. However, as soon as the earthquake begins to subside, it is advisable to get out of the house immediately," she concluded.
